1st European Semantic Web Symposium

May 10 to May 12, 2004

Heraklion, Greece

The vision of the Semantic Web is to enhance today's web via the exploitation of machine-processable meta data. The explicit representation of the semantics of data, accompanied with domain theories (ontologies), will enable a web that provides a qualitatively new level of service. It will weave together an incredibly large network of human knowledge and will complement it with machine processability. Various automated services will help the user achieve goals by accessing and providing information in machine-understandable form. This process may ultimately create extremely knowledgeable systems with various specialized reasoning services systems. Many technologies and methodologies are being developed within Artificial Intelligence, Human Language Technology, Machine Learning, Databases, Software Engineering and Information Systems that can contribute towards the realization of this vision.

In the European context, the 6th framework programme has demonstrated the EU's commitment to this technology area and a number of exciting new projects in the Semantic Web area have been launched, aggregated in the SDK project cluster - see for further details. A tutorial programme, based around these projects, offers the opportunity to get up to speed with European and global developments in this exciting new area. All 6th framework projects, as well as other leading projects, in the Semantic Web area will be represented with posters. The conference will be co-located with the OntoWeb thematic network seminar and the Knowledge Web network of excellence meeting – see and for further details of OntoWeb and Knowledge Web events, respectively.


ESWS2004 welcomes the submission of original research and application papers dealing with all aspects of the Semantic Web, particularly those relating to the subject areas indicated by the topics below. We particularly encourage the submission of papers relating to industrial efforts and experiences with Semantic Web projects. We also encourage theoretical, methodological, empirical and applications papers. The conference also encourages the submission of system demonstrations. Please see the Web site .

It is planned to publish the proceedings in the Springer Lecture Notes in Computer Science series

The only formats allowed for submission are PostScript or PDF (Adobe's Portable Document Format). These are widely supported and well-known standards: papers will not be accepted in any other format (e.g., MS Word) because of compatibility problems between software versions, machines, and nationalities. See the conference WWW site for information about how to convert other formats (e.g., MS Word) to PDF/PostScript. Note that the electronic submission site is likely to be very busy around the paper submission deadline. You are strongly urged to submit your abstract and your paper as far in advance of the deadline as possible.

Submitted papers must be formatted in the style of the Springer publications format for Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) .
ESWS2004 will not accept any paper which, at the time of submission, is under review for or has already been published or accepted for publication in a journal or another conference.
Authors of accepted papers will be required to markup the abstract of their submission (help will be provided for this task) for the (Semantic) Web. Details will be provided on the web page.
The conference will include contributed papers, system presentations, project posters and tutorials. There are two categories of paper submissions:
Research papers. Papers should not exceed fifteen (15) pages in Springer's LNCS format . They should describe original research (practical or theoretical), or provide a survey/overview of an area of research that is contributing to the realisation of the Semantic Web. Note that full length (15 pages) system/application papers are welcome in this category.
Industrial application papers Papers should not exceed fifteen (15) pages in Springer's LNCS format . They should describe an implemented tool or service that either contributes to the realisation of the Semantic Web or is using Semantic Web technology in a “real world” setting.
All European Semantic Web projects, as well as other research projects in the Semantic Web area world-wide, are invited to present a poster at the ESWS2004. Each project presenting a poster is requested to submit a two-page project description. Submission details will be on the web site . Submission deadline is February 28, 2004.
The conference also invites proposals to demonstrate novel Semantic Web software. This program is intended to showcase state-of-the-art Semantic Web implementations. Submissions will be evaluated on the basis of their innovation, relevance, scientific contribution, presentation, and user friendliness, as well as potential logistical constraints. This program is primarily to encourage the early exhibition of research prototypes, but interesting mature systems are also eligible (commercial sales and marketing activities are not appropriate in the Demonstration program). We encourage the submission of proposals for demonstrations of software related to any areas of the Semantic Web. Format for Submission: Demo proposals consist of the following parts, which should all be sent to the Demo Chair. - An abstract of the technical content to be demonstrated, not to exceed two pages, including title, authors, full contact information, references and acknowledgements. - The local organizer will provide, space, power, and a wireless internet connection (demonstrators should bring their own wireless network cards in addition to all other equipment required for the demo). Deadline for submission is January 31, 2004. The notification of acceptance will be on February 18, 2004.
